The oceans on Earth formed around 4 billion years ago from water vapor that was accumulated in the atmosphere. Volcanoes spewed out many gases as well as water vapor. Comets and asteroids were also partially made of ice. When they crashed into Earth's surface they added more to the water content.

As the Earth cooled, the water vapor condensed to form clouds, and the clouds rained down the water and created the oceans.

Ocean currents are some of the mightiest and most important cycles on the planet. They carry vast amounts of heat and water to various locations across the Earth, providing the continual changes that allow most animals and plant life to survive. While certain qualities of the ocean itself, such as its saline content and the topography of the ocean floor, affect currents, there are also a number of key outside forces responsible for move the water of our oceans

There are two types of currents: Surface currents and Deep currents. Surface currents are driven by the circulation of the wind above surface waters. These currents are formed at the upper 400m of the ocean. The winds that most affect the surface currents are the westerlies that blow west to east, and the trade winds that blow east to west. Deep currents flow beneath the surface water and are driven by density forces and gravity. The density of water changes in the oceans because of the variations in temperature and salinity.

There is a world wide oceanic circulation part of which is called the Thermo Haline Current.

In the Antarctic, when the ocean surface freezes slowly, the salt molecules are still liquid when the water molecules are forming ice. The salt is largely denied being part of the sea ice. This salt either blows off the top of the ice, or sinks below it, and thus there is formed a cold dense layer in the salt water. This is the start of the THC above.

What are the three types of ocean currents?

There are only two type of Ocean Currents: 1. Surface Currents- 10% of the water in the ocean 2. Deep Water Currents- 90% of the water in the ocean

What are causes of the ocean currents?

The two causes of ocean currents are wind and the rotation of the earth(etc) The wind blows which makes the currents in the water and the rotation of the earth(gravity) makes currents in the ocean currents. Luaye Sharawy

What are the two types of ocean currents?

deep currents streamlike movement of water that flow very slowly along the ocean floor. surface current can influence the climate of land are they flow past.

What effects do deeps currents have?

Deep ocean currents have enormous effect on climatic conditions. Deep ocean currents are also known as conveyor belt for temperature. There are two types of water currents, cold and warm. The warm water currents are less dense than cold water currents.

What are the two purposes of ocean currents?

Ocean currents have been created with the purpose of distributing heat (and cold) on earth. This has effects on the weather, which would be very different if the ocean waters were somehow static.
