In general they don't - magic is based on illusion, which is a method of misdirection based on known principles and techniques. The paranormal however, involves things that cannot be explained by current scientific or other rational means. Although groups like my own, TAPS, and others can use science and scientific equipment to detect entities and record paranormal activity, not enough is known about how entities are able to manifest, why they do, why they remain, etc.
Magic also relies on events that must be able to be called upon when required - Paranormal activity never, or rarely, happens when people wish it to. It happens when it happens. For that reason alone, Magicians cannot rely on the paranormal.
