Most Italian families build a nativity scene (presepio) on December 8, made up of figurines, a hut and the surrounding landscape, which represents the birth of Jesus Christ as described in the Gospel. The presepio is often, but not necessarily, put near a Christmas tree. Both the presepio and the tree will be removed on January 6.

On Christmas Day, most Italians go to Mass, except for atheists or immigrants that belong to different religions. Shortly afterwards, they have a big lunch with relatives and/or friends and they usually spend the rest of the day together, until another big dinner at 8 pm.
