People used what they had handy in those days, and some of the practices are still used. They boiled chestnut leaves and used the resulting tea for burns, which may have been helpful. They also scraped raw potatoes and put that on the burn, which was also probably useful. Some of the things they did were not helpful, and probably made the burns worse. One thing was to put butter on it. Butter seals the heat in, so it continues to damage the tissue.
