They either read books by people who have studied the culture, or have read the writings of the ancient Egyptians themselves.

Chocolate was not around as far as I know in Ancient Egypt. Chocolate is created by the Cocoa plant, which is only found in south and central America. Because we have not found any evidence of trade between Ancient Egypt and Ancient Meso-America, there isn't much of a chance that chocolate was ever eaten by ancient Egyptians. Thus, pharaohs weren't eating chocolate, so the answer to your question is no. Not because everyone there ate chocolate, but because nobody there ate chocolate.
In terms of money used in Ancient Egypt, because it is so long ago there is absolutely no way of comparing to any modern currency. They did not even have coins for much of the time of Ancient Egypt, initially using a barter system. Coins did eventually come in. There was not real world economy with international trade in the way we know it now, so the way we analyse economies between countries today did not apply in Ancient Egypt.
Basketball can be played pretty much anywhere in the world. Egypt...why not?
The original indigenous people of Egypt were the ancient Egyptians, who were racially and linguistically halfway between the Semitic people of the Middle East and the ancient Libyans, Tuaregs and Berbers of North Africa. Not Europeans, not Negro and not Semitic, they were another, separate race. Since 639 AD Egypt has been occupied by Muslim Arabs and its people have been racially subsumed by the Arabic people, culture and language (much like the Celts of Britain have been subsumed by foreign invasions).
