The Northeast has since the late 2000s, strong economic growth. Even during the world economic crisis of 2008-2009, the region showed an increase in GDP, while Brazil's GDP fell 0.2% in 2009, GDP grew 3.8% in Pernambuco, Ceara's GDP, 3.1%; and GDP of Bahia, 1.7%. This growth has softened the impact of capitalism's biggest crisis in 80 years in the Brazilian economy.

The Bank increased to 8.3% growth projection for gross domestic product (GDP) of the Northeast in 2010. It is expected that the increase is higher than Brazil, whose development should be 7.5% in 2010.

The region is seen by many economists as one of the most promising of the Western world, it has about 30% of the population and most of its inhabitants still outside the market.
