People do not develop Bipolar disorder. It is something they are born with. The disorder may not show up until late teens or early twenties.

Severe stress can cause bipolar to show up at any age. I may have been born with it but it didn't show til I was in my 40s and dealing with one of the worst life stressors.

Bipolar disorder is characterised as a condition of which symptoms consist of periods of extreme high moods, followed by extreme low moods, followed again by extreme high moods, and so on.

This can have a negative effect on the sufferer:

- Increased/decreased heart rate

- Increased/decreased metabolism

- Chronic Stress

- Insomnia

- Increased/decreased Sensitivity

- Chronic Fatigue

- Delusions of self grandeur/feelings of no worth

- Loss of appetite

- Increased agitation

- Increased chance of risky behaviour

- Decreased chance of normal behaviour

- Increased/decreased awareness

- Pessimism/optimism

- Memory loss

- Suicidal tendencies

- Psychotic Episodes (extreme cases)

All of this can cause a great amount of strain on the sufferers body and mind, and with rapid succession between high and low moods, can cause an even greater strain which could lead to more serious physical conditions.

First, the individual must be susceptable to the disorder. It runs in families, and is often inherited. But a trigger is needed, like anxiety or insecurity, which can occur in a relationship.

Is bipolar a genetic disorder?

Bipolar disorder has a genetic component - it does seem to run in families, and if you have people in your family who have bipolar disorder, you have a higher chance to have it yourself. However, there is more than just genetics causing it - scientists haven't figured out the whole think, but they know it is more than just a gene or group of genes. Some people can grow up in the same family and have the same genes, but not develop bipolar disorder.

How is bipolar disorder dominant?

The causes of bipolar disorder have not yet been precisely determined; however, genetics seem to play a large role. 80-90% of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder have a family history of either bipolar or major depression. However, this does NOT necessarily mean that someone with such a family history will inherit the genetic predisposition of the disease, or if they do, it will eventually develop into symptoms. The inheritance of bipolar disorder is not simple - it involves many genes, some of which are still being discovered and researched.
