Plants can benefit from soil.

One reason for this is due to the factor such as decomposion. As there plants live in decompostion this provides healthy nutrients for plants. (nutrient uptake) Therefore plants can benefit from soil.

1). Plants use the soil for anchorage

2). The soil particles act to trap water between them allowing the plant to draw water from it

3). Depending on the coarseness of the soil particles the soil is able to contain air pockets in it allowing for the uptake of Oxygen into the plant

4). The nature of the soil allows nutrients and minerals to be attached to them, enabling the plant access to a ready store of nutrient "food"

Plants take nutrients and water from the soil, those nutrients travel up the roots and up to the shoots of the plant. Then photosynthesis takes place with the interaction with the sunlight.
