Rabbits lick themselves clean like many small animals. Rabbits should NEVER be "given a bath or shower" as submerging them in water can cause shock and kill your furry little friend. Only wet your rabbit if it is suffering heat exhaustion and only do this to his ears. (The ears have many large veins in them which can help to rapidly cool the rabbit.) Remember that rabbits in the wild manage to keep themselves clean without any assistance and yours can do this also.
If it is very hot out, there are many things you can do to keep your bunny cool. If you don't have air conditioning for the rabbit, you should do research to find out how to keep a bunny cool, and what temperatures pet rabbits can and can't handle.
If your rabbit is messy, that means something is wrong, and probably the rabbit is sick. Bring the bunny to a vet for a physical exam. If you need to clean your bunny, make sure you do research and find out how to do it safely, because baths can be very dangerous for rabbits.
