They fair very well on fish and chicken, dead or live. My husband had 2 racoon's from babies (Kits) and they lived on fish and chicken. If the free range chickens went to close to their pen, they became dinner! They lived to the age of 14 years old.

Raccoons are usually nocturnal, so they gather their food and necessary items for living at night. Raccoons are also most of the time predators, so other animals will know to stay away from them.

Raccoons eat a wide variety of plant and animal matter. The eat many insects, earthworms, grubs, crayfish, snails, slugs, mice and other small rodents, fish, frogs, snakes, lizards, as well as fruits, nuts and berries and reptile and bird eggs. Of course, they also love to rummage through trash cans looking for edibles and also enjoy eating pet food left outside.

The first line of defense is to escape, usually by climbing a tree. They also have sharp teeth and claws that they know how to use to fight off a predator. In the end they may be a victim but not before causing serious injuries to their foe.

They put on additional weight during the summer so they can survive leaner times in winter. When the weather is severe or there is deep snow on the ground they will remain in their den and sleep until conditions improve. They do not hibernate, however.

Raccoons don't hibernate but they do sleep for most of the winter. The amount of fur and body fat on them is what keeps them warm in the winter.

Every time I've ever seen a Raccoon, they've been in a dumpster, jumping out of a dumpster, or tearing apart someones garbage in the front of their house. I'm thinking they eat our leftovers.

Raccoons do not hibernate and will be active much of the winter. However, during periods of heavy snow and/or severe cold, they will remain in their den and sleep until conditions improve.
