Well rattlesnakes just like many other reptiles have their own special adaptations to their environment's. for example many rattlesnakes are found in hot, dry and open areas mostly the dessert. rattlesnakes are color blind so there eyes don't help much, the rattle on the end of there tail is used as bait. the rattle snake uses it catch small rodents attention making them think its a big juicy worm, same with small birds. While doing this the rattle snake keeps itself unseen by burrowing in sand or hiding under a rock. they can tell when prey is near because snakes feel vibrations on the surface of their hunting ground. some times they will wait days until something comes along for them to ambush.

Yes. Not only can they smell their prey but they can smell the direction of their prey. Each time the snake flicks its forked tongue out, it gathers scent molecules. The ends of the tongue deposit the molecules in the two pits of the Jacobson organ. Whichever side is registering a stronger concentration is the side on which the prey is located.

Rattlesnakes generally lie in wait in a sheltered location, such as under a bush or log, and wait quietly for prey to come into range of their strike. If a prey item approaches close enough the snake will strike and inject venom. Once the animal is overcome by the venom, the snake will follow its scent trail and swallow it. Sometimes they will also enter burrows of small animals looking for food.
