Naturally, to see objects up close, the lens in your eye protrudes more to focus on close objects or writing. The process of focusing on close objects is called accommodation. When a person gets older, often around age 40, the eyes begin to lose their ability to focus on close objects. That condition is called presbyopia (from Latin, literally meaning "old eyes"). Anyway, the retina is the part of the eye that sends the image to the brain. The problem here is that light focuses behind the retina rather than on it.

Lenses to correct presbyopia and hyperopia (farsightedness) are convex lenses, meaning the lenses are the thickest in the center. They cause light to converge, meaning they cause light waves to bend closer together. So the eyeglasses adds enough power to the natural lens so when you look at things close up, the light rays converge into a point sooner, thus focusing directly on the retina.

Reading glasses are one type of corrective lenses used to improve vision. They fall under the broader category of glasses, eyeglasses, and spectacles, normally prescribed by doctors to correct vision problems.

Today, glasses come in a variety of frames, and are normally supported by padding on the bridge of the nose and by arms that wrap around the ears. In the past, variations on corrected frames included the pince-nez, monocle, lorgnette, and scissors-glasses.

Corrective lenses are now crafted from plastic. Using plastic ensures better durability than glass lenses. In addition, plastic lenses transmit light better than glass, and also absorb harmful UV rays. And, for cases of vision abnormalities like myopia, plastic lenses are better for light refraction and therefore create a sharper image than glass lenses.

Glasses serve many purposes, and so come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some of the various types include

• Corrective glasses and lenses: These glasses are used to improve the refraction of light by the eye. This can correct conditions like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Corrective lenses adjust the focal length of light in order to correct errors of refraction.

• Safety glasses are used in a variety of settings to protect wearers from harmful contact with foreign substances. They are made with shatter-resistant plastic lenses and frames. Depending on the setting they’re used in, safety glasses may require any number of varying thicknesses and levels of protection.

• Sunglasses may be made by prescription or not, and function to block excessive amounts of light. They work by using protective, darkened lenses that block harmful light and UV rays. In addition, photochromic lenses are now available, which are photosensitive and darken when in contact with UV light.

• Reading glasses are magnified lenses or regular spectacles that function to correct mild presbyopia and hyberopia. These lenses can be bought off the shelf for general-purpose use. However, consulting an ophthalmologist or optometrist can help improve eyesight correction, and avoid headaches and discomfort.

• Bifocals, trifocals, and progressive lenses are corrective lenses used for specific situations. Multifocal lenses may have two or three distinct horizontal vision areas, each available for a wearer’s use.

Are there glasses made for seeing computers?

There are glasses prescribed specifically for people who work on computers. The need manifests itself because the "reading" section on glasses is often too close for the computer, and the "distance" section often too far. I wear glasses with a third section between the "reading" and "distance" sections, and I call this the "computer monitor" section. I have heard this type of glasses being called "trifocals."
