1. Open the hood. Can be tricky if you don't do it much or never.. there is a latch by the driver's foot area on the left hand side of the wall by the foot area. THen the hood latch is UNDER THE GRILL just above the bumper by the driver's side.
2. There are two silver tabs above the light- they hold the light onto the car and they simply pull up and off.
3. The back of the light has a plastic access port that twists off.
4. then the bulb can be unplugged.
5. then the bulb can be twisted out of it's position to free it.
6. the replacement bulb is usually gray tipped with a red seal at the bottom. If you havn't bought it yet look for this one at the part store.
Just stick the new bulb in- plug it in and reverse the previous steps and you are done!
On my 2004 XC90 the lens covering the position light swings open left to right. The bulb is easily accessible.
Not sure what you mean about "front position light" however most of the time your owner's manual will address these repairs. See sources and related links below for 2004 Volvo XC90 bulb information.
Changing brake lightbulb on xc901. open tailgate.2. remove corner floor piece by lifting.3. remove corner side panel. pull out from tab on bottom.4. remove two hex bolts(#10) to release light housing. they look like large Allen wrenches.5. replace bulb(s) and refasten again.
Near the driver side headlamp. Next to the airbox.

On the 2007 XC90 -- There is no transmission dipstick !!
The position light cover pops out or rather swings out, after you gently insert a small screwdriver into the slot and give a pry. Easy.
It is on a timer; just give 10 minutes or so, and it will shut off.
