One way in which geologists study the Earth is by going to different areas and investigating the landforms there. They often also use instruments to tell them what kind of minerals are present and if the area has any seismic activity.

Geologists have a number of ways to study the geological history of the earth. One method is to examine the layers of earth from a land formation such as a high cliff formation. As example the Great Canyon has extremely high layered cliffs. Geologists can take samples of each layer and analyze their chemical or other earth science categories to make an estimate of the age of the certain layer of earth. Along with this they can make comparisons in other locations and make determinations about when these samples existed and even what kind of life forms, if any existed at the time.

In other situations a geologist can examine the building materials used in ancient structures such as temples and pyramids and make estimates of when and where the stones or other natural building materials originated.
