The commonest way, and the one that is easiest to use in most circumstances, involves a spool of chemically treated paper. You tear off a short length,dip the end into the liquid to be tested and compare the colour to which the paper has changed to colours on the spool. The colours are labelled with their respective pHs.

There are also hand-held probes with integrated meters.
