Best Answer

because unlike mammals, sharks do not have lungs (like other fish) and the gills act as filters. They process oxygen through the water so they can breath thus the shark always has to keep moving (depending on the species of course)

The respiratory system consists of the gills, gill rakers, the mouth, spiracles, gill lamellae, working together in conjunction with the circulatory system. Essentially, the goals of these systems are to absorb and circulate oxygen and other nutrients through the blood with the intention of distributing them to various parts of the body.

Oxygenated water passes over the gills, which have a rich, near surface blood supply. Gases are exchanged between the blood and the water, which supplies the oxygen the fish needs.
