Skua are well adapted to survive in Antarctica, with their layer of fat next to their skin. As well, their webbed feet toes end in talons, so they can feed on other birds, especially eggs and chicks.

They have also discovered the research station garbage dumps and have learned how to feed from them.

Some tagged skua have been known to live for 25 years in Antarctica, or more.
