You can then either keep the stocks if you think they will do better so that you can sell them for a higher price (they're worth more if they do better) or if you think that they're going to tank you should sell them before they do so you lose very little money or none at all. Although stocks could tank or rise at any second so it's kind of hard to determine what they will do sometimes.
