Cetaceans may have a extra sense called biomagnetisium. What that does is enables cetaceans to detect variations in the Earth's magnetic field. They may use that magnetic field as a map to navigate.
It is theorized that they are more attuned to the Earth's magnetic fields than we are, and are able to sense where north and south are, like they have an internal compass. Knowing the cardinal directions is essential in long-distance navigation, especially at sea.
