The natives made use of several major rivers flowing through the area as an efficient way to travel through the heavily forested terrain. Their canoes were called spoon canoes and were long, narrow, and had a shallow keel. They were propelled by pole and paddle. When traveling on the ocean larger, deeper dug out canoes were used which were hewed out of a single cedar tree. There were also extensive trails, some of which covered hundreds of miles, for overland travel between villages.
