Look for sticky keys, bent keys, bent extras on the oboe that could easily be bent and affect it when you play, that sort of thing. Or if in doubt and can't find anything on the exterior of the instrument check your reed, or take it to a shop for a quick look over. Hope this helps :)

An oboe is played with a double sided reed. There is a hole in the middle in which you blow through. And of course you also press the keys.
An oboe's sound comes from the air vibrating between the double reed. The pitch can be changed by pressing the keys.
The oboe is almost always black. But wood oboes are made from Grenadilla or Rosewood have a slightly reddish hue in certain light. The keys are nickel plated, and are thus silver.
