The Three Wise Men saw a star in the sky and the Wise Men believed that if there was a bright star in the night that it would be the coming of a new king. When Jesus was born, King Herrod told the Wise Men to go and see the Baby that was going to be called the new king. King Herrod told the Three wise men that he was going to worship this baby but he just need to know where he was. Being a typical king, he never wanted to loose his power and riches so King Herrod feared of being replaced by a baby that was going to replace him. The Three Wise men followed the star and finally came to the Stable of where the Baby Jesus was born. That night an Angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him to take the baby and flee to Egypt and the Wise Men went back to their countries and never returned to the king. King Herrod became angry when the wise men never came back and ordered that all babies that were 2 years and younger to be dead.
Their names were Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar - known collectively as The Magi.(Magi is the plural of Magus -meaning 'wise man' from which we get the word 'magician'.)
