the person infected with the disease will get large black boils. doctors will cut the boils off or burn the boils. this then causes the person with the disease to die from loss of blood.
sometimes, if it was only one part of the body that was covered with boils (e.g. the leg/ arm) the doctors will simply cut the body part off and hope that it hasn't already spread to another part of the body. there was no such thing as anaesthetic so patients were still conscious when the operation happened. also they wouldn't have had their body stitched back up properly so they would still probably die from loss of blood.
