The "Three Strike Rule" or "Three Strike Penalty" is the idea that someone who has committed, and has been convicted of, three felonies is a continuous nuisance and danger to society, thus they should be removed for a long period of time.
Generally, at the third felony conviction, the minimum sentence that can be given is a lengthy period of time (20 years, for example).
It's a deterrent because the average individual does not want to do a lengthy amount of time in prison. If someone has two felony convictions, they're going to put a lot more effort into not getting that third. If the penalty is properly used, then three strike-d individuals can be made an example of for the younger individuals, who may consider committing similar offenses.
Referred to as general deterrence.
They increase the severity and length of punishment.Added: The more crime you commit the more llikely you are to receive a more harsh sentence.
No, it should not because most people will take advantage of it and once someone does a crime it will repeat often more than three times
