There are a few ways depending on the eruption. In some cases lava flows can simply burn the trees and then cover over the soil in solid rock. In explosive eruptions the force of the blast or the resulting pyroclastic flows can knock down large numbers of trees. In still other cases, trees may be killed where they stand by hot ash and gas.
