the mother will stay with the young deer until it is approximately 1 yr. old some times longer. The young deer gets milk from it's mother at first and gradually learns what and how to eat by observing it's mother.

The mother deer will nurse the fawn until it can eat solid food, when the fawn is old enough to follow its mother(at about a month old) , the mother deer will show the fawn where to go to get food, water and by example will teach it what to fear.
