How do wind socks work?

The wind sock has a solid ring entry to catch the wind which will fill the "sock", inflating it and aligning it in the direction the wind is travelling. The alignment will need some form of hing or pivot mechanism to allow the sock to rotate 360º to gather wind from any direction.

AN often asked question is why is the cross sectional area of the wind sock convergent as the air travels from entry to exit? The continuity equation states (density x velocity x area = constant) so that as the cross-sectional area reduces the velocity of the air through the wind sock will increase.

However, Bernoulli's incompressible equation (Total pressure = static pressure plus dynamic pressure) states that as the velocity increases the dynamic pressure increases but the static pressure decreases so that the total pressure remains the same. This should mean the ambient pressure of the atmosphere outside the wind sock will be greater than the static pressure inside the sock and the exit area of the sock will be pushed shut, preventing the wind from passing through!

Why is that then?
