The Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Chinese advanced the field of geography by documenting their worlds. Their findings and philosophies prevailed through the Dark Ages (500-1500 A.D.).

Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) is considered the father of physical geography. He mapped and described the landscapes of Central and South America and parts of the U.S. and Russia.
