I found it easier to simply leave the original wiring in and unscrew the half inch plate the held the two main wires of the turn signal and main brake lights and reattach them to the the replacement assembly. It's not even necessary for the wires to be fastened to the housing, actually.

Take the screws out and lift the assembly away from the car outwards, there is a post on the front end holding it onto the side of the car. Then just twist the brake light socket to the left and pull it out to get to the bulb.
