First off, you need a hole in the bass drum head. Some performing drummers neglect to do this and they get a thin sound that lacks attack.

Secondly, invest in a quality kick drum mic. I prefer an AKG D112, but some guys like the Shure Beta 52. Stay away from the Audix D6. I love Audix for toms, but they can't build a decent kick mic.

Lastly, just stick it in the hole. Some guys put it just inside, other move it closer to the beater for more attack. Just experiment.

IMPORTANT!!! I guess I should have mentioned this first. A great miced drum sound starts with a properly tuned drum. Deaden it up, get the ring out of it. The resonate head should be justtight enough to get the wrinkles out.

Good luck.

What does a whole in a bass drum cover do?

I am not quite sure what you mean by "Bass drum cover"But I have a feeling you mean the front head called the Resonant Head of the bass drum.A hole allows for a mic to be placed somewhat inside the drum to capture the whole sound of the drum.

Would a 20 by16 bass drum be good with a porthole?

Any size Bassdrum would sound fine with a Mic Porthole. You just need to either tune it low, or high depending on the sound your looking for.A mic porthole is there to soley make a mic be able to capture the whole sound of the bass, and not just the reso head.

How do you tune your bass drum?

depends what kind of style you play. i play rock and metal so if you play thAT TYPE, THEN HERES WHAT I DID TO GET THE SOUND. first i put a pillow in it to muffle it some then from there you want it sort of loose... if you lisen to a band and hear the bass drum, thers a kind of click in the sound. that's made by the mic cuz the computer just adds it in. i made a home made click sound with the pillow and the bass drum. just keep tightening or loosening it until it sounds good. =)

What is an inlay cut on a bass drum hoop?

If you mean the hole cut into the skin, it is called the port hole and it is used to mic the bass drum. If you mean the groove cut into the inside diameter of the hoop, it is used for attaching the kick pedal.

What is a Wood cajon drum?

It is a wood drum in the shape of a box. You sit on it to play it and the playing surface is between you shins. The lower to center part of the drum creates a bass sound and the upper end has a higher pitch. Some cajons have a snare on the inside of the upper playing surface and gives a somewhat sound close to snare drum. In the back of a cajon is a hole from where the sound eminates and where a mic could be placed. Some bands use a cajon in unplugged sets.

What is Phase change recording?

When recording a snare drum with a mic on the top and the bottom, a phenomenon known as phase cancellation can occur. Sound is a wave. A property of waves is that they can interfere with each other destructively and constructively. Imagine the sound waves caused when hitting a snare drum. The waves from the top of the drum will go into the top mic first, then the bottom mic. The waves from the bottom of the drum will go into the bottom mic first then the top mic. Because of the timing of the waves as they arrive at each mic, they will destructively interfere, and many of the frequencies integral to a good snare drum sound will be low in gain (volume). So a good audio engineer will use a phase reversal lead on the bottom mic. This is just like a normal lead, only the positive and negative pins have been reversed, and the phase cancellation will not occur.

What do you need to mic your drum set?

It depends on where you are, and what size building you are playing in. if you are in a small-medium hall, then most kits will be able to carry their sound over the rest of the music without needing amplifications at all, apart from maybe a mic underneath the hi-hat to pick up them and the snare. For large gigs, stadiums and the such, or recording, most people use: 1 capacitor mic above the ride 1 capacitor above the crash 1 capacitor above by the high hats 1 unidirectional mic by the snare, 1 by high tom, 1 by low tom, 1 by floor tom, and 1 by bass drum. This covers 8 tracks right there - and normally in recording practices you actually use 2 tracks per instrument, say track 1 cranked over to full left channel and track 2 cranked over to full right channel. This is what produces the true stereo effect.
