The road was of approxinately single track width with the first 50 or so miles from Kumba having tarmac surface and narrow bridges. This road became infamous for the potholes that developed, the steep Supe hill up which many local vehicles struggled. In the 1970's a new road was built for part of the journey, which may have shortened the distance.
