Here is what I did for my barometer. I looked up the local barometric pressure online. Then I turned the altitude adjuster on the barometer until the reading was the same as the reading that I looked up online. If I am at roughly the same altitude as the one taken online, then I know that the altitude has been adjusted correctly when both barometers have the same reading. It is a backward method of doing it, but it should work.
This should be close enough for casual use. If you want to actually collect scientific data, you might need a better method.
