There is a rod that runs from the clutch pedal mechanism to the clutch fork. On this rod there should be threads and a couple of nuts to adjust the length of the rod shorter or longer. Adjust as needed.
shifting rod
On the transmission where the shift rod connects. The rod should run through a block or bracket that has a bolt that tightens down on the rod. Loosen the bolt and the rod should slide in the bracket. When you have it in place, tighten the bolt back down. It could also be worn bushings where the rod changes direction. These can just be replaced.
Located on the carb look at your throttle linkage. Under the throttle linkage but on the same plate you will see another rod that runs down behind the engine. This rod also is used for your passing gear and runs down to the trans. You need to adjust the travel on this rod. If it is shifting late adjust it longer I belive. Try it and if not go the other way. Good Luck!!

One possibility is the shift rod in the steering column may have broke, that happened to my 93. The shift lever wouldn't move, that is what led me to believe it was the shift rod.
Absolutely Your shift rod is not seated properly. The shift rod is attached to your transmission at the rear wheel, right by the brake pads. There is an adjustment nut for the shift there. 1. Loosen the nut but do not remove it. 2. Manually put shift in Neutral. 3 Now tighten nut. 4. Shift should now be in proper alignment. 5. If this does not work, try again. You will see that by pulling in and out on the short shift stub coming out of the transmission, that this is what you need to adjust.
Escort doesn't have a gear shift cable. It has a gear shift rod. To remove it: Remove the shift control rod nut and bolt Take off the shift knob. Remove the console. Remove the shift boot. Pry out the shifter spring. Lift the shift ever out of the housing. Take the nuts that hold the shift housing on the end of the extension bar. Take the extension bar from the transaxle, lower the shift housiing and take the shift control rod from the transmission.
from the top of gear case housing at mounting bolts hole measure the shift rod at 21.5 inches to center of hole in shift rod,in neutral gear.
I have a 94 Pontiac Grand AM SE and replacing the bulb on gear shift is difficult. The whole panel that the gear shift sits on can be remove. First pull the pin out from the shift knob its located in the front of the knob just above the metal rod it sits on. Then pull out the knob. After that just pry out the panel carefully at the sides, starting from the cigarette lighter up to where the switch is to adjust the mirror. Disconnect the wire from the cigarette lighter, gear shift and the switch that adjust the mirrors. The bulb is on a circuit that is one with the gear shift indicators.
