Set the engine at TDC on the compression stroke by either using a flashlight to watch the piston or a small screwdriver in the spark plug hole move to the top. Both intake and exhaust should have some play. If only the intake has play, then you are on the exhaust stroke, and you need to move the engine trough one more cycle to get it on the compression stroke. Then set the valve to .003 on the intake and .005 on the exhaust. If none of this makes sense, take it somewhere to have it done.

Its kind of a pain in the backside to do yourself, the bike shop will charge about $40 to do it while you get the oil changed. You can do it yourself, but its easier to pay them to do it, they wont take all day, and you dont swear as much.

A few things you will need 1. Bike Manual (Haynes makes one) 2. Feeler Gauges 3. Torque Wrench The benefit to these bikes is that the valves can be adjusted without having to buy shims. If you are not fairly confident mechanically you should not attempt. Tightening the toleranes too far can destroy your engine. 1. Remove fuel tank 2. Remove valve cover 3. Remove coil cover (on right side of engine in front and above clutch cover) 4. Rotate engine so #1 cylinder is top dead center ("ex" and "in" on cam sprockets will line up) (timing mark "t" on the rotor lines up with timing mark on enigine) 5. Check the intake clearances on #1 and #3 (.08mm-.13mm). Check the exhaust clearances on #1 and #2 (.12mm-.17mm) 6. To adjust, loosen the lock nut on the lifter adjustment and turn flat head screw in or out. Tighten nut after adjustment. 7. Rotate engine with wrench on the rotor 1 full revolution (places #4 top dead center). 8. Check intake clearances of #2 and #4 and the exhaust of #3 and #4. 9. Replace evertything in reversed order. Torque specs valve cover.........87 lbs. If you are not experienced, and don't have a mechanic you can ask questions of, you shouldn't attempt. These are rough directions. If you are not familiar with the tools involved, you might want to just take it in. A valve adjustment will cost around $400 - but worth it if you might destroy your engine doing it yourself. Hope this helps. Experience: own a 1988 zx750 - have adjusted the valves a couple times.

Clearance between intake camshaft and tappet should be between. 004 and. 008 inch gap clearance between exhaust camshaft lobes and tappets should be between .008 and. 012 gap if it is not within that tolerance you can either grind the tappet shims if the gap is to tight or you have to order tappet shims of the correct size that are available in. 005 mm increments

First, check for blockage or obstruction of the pilot jet. Confirm that the valve clearance is back to zero before you adjust the clearance.
