You don't "apply." You have to go to one of the audition locations that American Idol does every summer. If you make it to the judges and they like you, you go on to Hollywood.
You can't sign up. You have to wait until you are at least 16.

No, Jordin Sparks won American Idol Season 6 , he was the runner-up .
no, but if you cant sign, its generally a good idea
American idol makes you become a singer if you win or if you get far enough and have a good enough voice it puts you out there for America to here your voice and possibly a record company could sign you
You show up at the auditions.
you would just say American idol if you were refering to the American idol in America whitch it would not be American idol anywhere else because its American but back to the point....you would say American Idol for American idol.
Jordin Sparks won on American Idol in 2007, in the 6th season of American Idol.
In American Idol, 2008 season 7, David Cook won, and David Archuleta was runner up. In American Idol , 2007 season 6,I believe Carrrie Underwood won.
American Idol has a very strict contract requiring all contestants to forgo releasing details, but it is generally considered that you are limited to one audition.
