In the United States, becoming a therapist requires a good amount of college training.

Generally, a person whom wants to become a therapist/psychiatrist starts by studying to receive their CSW, or Clinical Social Worker certificate. This can take 4 years of generalized College, and is also a Bachelor's Degree level of qualification.

An additional 4 years of Medical School training, then another 4 years of residency at a hospital is required to become fully certified as a Psychiatrist.

After all of these requirements are met, applying for a license to practice psychiatry is required by each individual state.
