The best precaution is to check online if the hotel you're about to check into as some nasty pest-filled reviews. However, if you unfortunately end up staying in a hotel that is infested with bed bugs, launder all your clothes with hot water and detergent and dry on low heat for about 20 mins and then seal all your freshly - laundered items in an air tight plastic bag. However, if you carry some of the bed bugs home in your luggage, call a professional immediately before the infestation worsens.

1. Always check the mattress before you get into the bed. Pull up the sheets, check all of the seams of the mattress, and lift up the mattress and take a look at the box spring. I always pack a flashlight with me for this process. Unless they have a bad infestation, you probably won't see any even if they do have them, but this is worth doing.

2. Do not put your suitcase on the bed or on the floor. If there is a suitcase rack then put it on that.

3. Travel with trash bags. When I travel I line my suitcase with a trash bag and put everything in it. Then when I get home I just take the bag of clothes and dump it immediately into the wash.

4. Don't bring your suitcase into your home after a trip. If you have a garage, put your suitcase in the garage. If you live in an apartment building, bag up your suitcase. You can also purchase a bed bug spray to spray down your suitcase before bringing it back into your home.

5. Put your shoes in the dryer on high heat for 30 minutes when you get home. Bed bugs don't just travel on clothes and suitcases.

Bedbugs can be nearly impossible to eradicate once they've infested a home. Most people who have bedbug infestations bring the pests home in their luggage after traveling. To avoid an infestation, visit BedBugRegistry.com. This site has a search feature that allows users to see if a prospective hotel has any past or present reports of bedbugs. Even if a hotel doesn't have bedbug reports, it's a good idea to purchase a bottle of bedbug spray. For flying travelers, there are small bottles available that are in accordance with TSA's regulations.

You stayed at a hotel with bedbugs What should you do?

If it was a serious infestation, when you leave that hotel you need to take appropriate measures to try to avoid bringing any live bedbugs or bedbug eggs home with you. Otherwise you could bring the hotel's bedbug problem with you into your home. You could spray the inside of all your luggage with a powerful insecticide as well as all clothes you had with you in the hotel. A better idea could be when you get home if possible do not bring your luggage or clothes that were in the hotel into your home at all. Instead if you can afford to just burn the lot outside and as far away from your home as possible.

Can bed bugs live on shoes and purses?
