As with most legal questions... it depends. If you legally own the CD/DVD you are allowed to make a "back up" copy for your personal use. If you do not own the material you need to seek permission from the rights holder before making duplicates.
Large programs fit perfectly on one CD-ROM, which reduces costs and makes installation of the program that much easier for the user. However, a DVD can hold up to 6 times as much more data than a CD.
Unfortunately, you can't. It's only for cheats and media playing. But Swap Magic CD/DVD might help you. The latest version is 3.8. Plus, you can enable cheats with it, just like Xploder. For back-up CD's you use SM CD, and for DVD's, well, you get it.
DVD's I'm not sure but I copy my CD's to my hard drive using Windows Media Player or any other software that converts a song from CD format to MP3 or WMA formats. A MP3 or WMA file is about a tenth the size of the original. I have over 4 thousand songs on my hard drive and it only takes up about 15 GB of space. I don't think you can back up DVD's without special pirating software.
The most common way to wreck a CD or DVD is to get a scratch on the bottom surface, making the disc unreadable. Cracks from taking the DVD in and putting it back in the case multiple times may occur.
A DVD is more preferable than CD for its higher storage capacity than CD. Generally, a CD can hold up to 700 MB whereas a DVD can hold up to 4.7 GB. DVD is not only superior than CD in storage capacity, but also it is superior in requirement. It has been experienced that some system softwares require more than one CD or even one complete movie requires two or three CDs for storage. The use of DVD can overcome these problems as one DVD can be used to store the information of a number of CDs. A DVD requires a DVD combo drive or a DVD player which allows to read CDs as well as DVDs. Thus, a DVD is more preferable than a CD.
