Obviously by understanding, know where ,why ,when & such, try to exceed your class a lesson so the moment you take the new lesson, you have already read it and got questions to answer, in tests and exams study in at least 2 days before, 1 day isn't enough, when you try to review before any test ,quiz ,exam, or whatever you call it don't read what you have studied, ask yourself questions about whatever lessons are coming, if you want to write some important questions on a paper do so, as they'll help you to review later on, don't get rid of any class work, quiz, test or whatever after getting it back from your teacher, use them to study for later quizzes and tests, they often use similar questions, but not exactly the same, (Example: you got a quiz with the 1st page multiple choice questions then some calculations and terminology, then some calculations and such in most cases the next test or quiz will have the same structure), and if you got a final/midterm exam, summarize everything while you are studying, example read a page write on a paper what have you understood from that page, that works great, even though it sounds tough and hard but honestly it isn't if you get used to it.
