How do you beat Nano-Combat Training on Poptropica?

The game is a members-only preview to Virus Hunters Island (August, 2013). In it you fight attacking mechanical microbes in the miniature bioship Panacea. The object is to shoot fast and destroy your enemies.

The game board is a grid array based on the Thunder Volt game on the Wimpy Boardwalk bonus quest, except that you cannot leave the grid. The ship moves and fires directionally as enemies pass through, or chase it around the grid. There are 4 levels of firepower, and a health meter that decreases with any enemy contact or hit by enemy fire. Hits also reduce your firepower, which can be increased by collecting red "power up" capsules released when some enemies are destroyed. A major drawback is that you have to be pointed in the direction of your enemies to fire at them, then turn to move away.

There are 4 waves of attackers. Wave 3 concludes with a large boss that takes up a considerable area of the screen. Wave 4 is even more difficult because of the number of shots fired by the boss. A complete game takes approximately 25 minutes.
