It depends on how advanced you are in the game, and what your definition of 'beat' means. To beat the Johto region, you have to defeat the Elite Four to obtain the National Pokedex. Then, you must fight Red in order to get a Kanto Starter. You then have to beat all the Kanto Gyms, then move onto Hoenn.
