Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen: The third leader uses Electric Pokemon. Use a Ground type, like Diglett or Geodude.

Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald: Another Electric gym. Ground types are the answer.

Pokemon Diamond and Pearl: The third gym leader uses Fighting Pokemon. Use Flying, Bug, Poison, and Psychic types.

Pokemon Platinum: The third gym leader uses Ghost Pokemon. This fight is very difficult. A Dark-type works well. You can't catch any Dark Pokemon at this point, so either trade for one or use Ghost-types like Rotom and Haunter. A Normal-type Pokemon that knows a Dark-type move like Bite can be useful.
