You beat your rival the same way you beat every other trainer in the game: you train and level up your pokemon. Yes, this is time consuming. Yes, this can be boring and repetitive. However, it is the best way (and, as far as I'm concerned, the only way) to defeat your rival. The exception to this is the very first time you battle him. I recommend using your defensive move first, then using your offensive move with reckless abandon. Hope and pray that he doesn't get a critical hit on your pokemon. Good luck!
