One thing i have consistently seen throughout different retail and other cashier related jobs is the quality of the cashier's attitude. Attitude
No matter what you are going through in your day, you should try your best to keep the glass half full. In some cases, I know, it's too rough to even survive the thoughts of your troubles...However, it is important to remember that all these bad things come to an end...you will survive the day and once you get out of work...you can mutter all the curses you've accumulated to yourself on the way home or spend time to think about what you can do next...If you find yourself overwhelmed take work as the first step of knocking your troubles out of the way...you most likely have the time to deal with reality afterwards. Take whatever you have on your plate one step at a time...it makes it easier...for instance...when you're at work...you cannot care for your sick relative or logically talk with someone you had an argument with. Look at customers as tokens as weird as that sounds...but the meaning of it is to look at your customers as people you can give a better day, hoping that once all is said and done you may be able to receive even appreciation as a boost for the next customer. It's a lot like a game at the register...especially if you have a lot of stock to grab in between transactions.
If a customer gives you a hard time for whatever reason(ugh)...kill them with kindness...because no matter what is giving them that umph to strangle you over a mess, all you have to do is listen to them say that you understand your frustration however this is the way it is (given you're trying to do your job right)
Other than that, just ask the customers how they are and get them what they want!
Transactions
An important thing that i don't have down all the time is learning to count up or count down from the price and the amount given...if you learn without a calculator you will be much better off...it's nerdy but my math teacher told me "if you live by the calculator, you die by the calculator" and it makes SENSE! You must get used to counting because if your register messes up, you type things in wrong, or your customer decides to change their bills for the hell of it you will be stuck and may freeze up for 2-3 minutes trying to compensate for a mistake...We all make mistakes and even when you learn to count purchases you will STILL make mistakes...we're human and we'd like to keep it that way...Whichever way you learn how to count doesn't matter...there are thousands of ways to calculate entire transactions with additives and whatnot...so do what you must as long as we both get the same result.
All counting is is practice...there is no easy way to become a quick cashier...it's practice!
Management
If you are under a manager being at the cashier or if you are a manager and you work the register whenever you're done doing the boss work you probably want to understand that you have to cover your butt!! What i mean is getting your things done from whoever your boss is...even if it doesn't make much sense...if a manager above your position makes a bad managerial move and you are doing some of that legwork it reflects on the person with the initial idea NOT YOU! So please understand that if you have to keep the register lower or higher before drops do what your manager says....do drops when the manager says it's a good time to...if you don't do drops then you don't really have to worry about it...It's very self explanatory not to steal by the way so i don't really think we have to get into that.

Conclusion
Everything stated is very important to being a cashier and i hope it helped even a little bit...because almost every job has a register or a computer to make transactions....everything states is also very obvious...all it is is trying your best to keep the customer satisfied, moving, and motivated...just make sure you try to do your job efficiently and try to keep it by doing what your told...I don't want to work a register for my life...but if it get's me to what i do want to do...i'll work for it...if you want to become a doctor and you have to work at best buy while interning...you know that it's just a temporary thing...and if working retail and register is your thing...you're business...GREAT! DANDY! have fun! hope this helped...toodles
