First of all, you have to be the Mechanic class in order to do so. Now, for boarding it, you don't actually board it until your first job advancement (level 10). Once your level 10, open your skills tab (k) and click on "Mech-Prototype" to board. I would recommend you place it on a hot key for easier access.
