AnswerFirstly, do you have an alternator with an INTERNAL REGULATOR built in - or do you have the (older) style that uses an external regulator?

Changing over from one type of generator OR alternator to another (implied by your question that the old regulator is not alternator compatible or compatible with the new(er) alternator otherwise it would be a simple remove and replace operation) be very careful.

The internal regulator alternators are pretty simple. You need 1) 12 volt feed to feed the fields the alternator will generate off of 2) a connection to feed the produced current to the battery and the 3) activation current from the key switch.

Without #3 through the switch to turn the alternator off when the car is turned off, the alternator will remain on even when the motor is not running and the current feeding the generating fields will drain the battery.

When in doubt, spend the money for a qualified mechanic.

Additional Tips: If your shade tree is hard to start or runs rough, go to a shade tree mechanic. If you are betting your life and that of your family on your vechicle - go to a vehicle mechanic.

Also, check the condition of your brakes at least once every six months. Getting the car to go is a matter of convenience. Getting it to stop is a matter of survival.

On most vehicles today the voltage regulator is built into the alternator. If that is the case then just replace the alternator. If the voltage regulator is external on your vehicle then replace the voltage regulator.
