When you turn the key off and lock the doors, there will be a red light on the top of the dash that flashes while the alarm arms.
The only way i found to disarm the alarm was to use the back hatch lock. lock it and unlock it a few times with the key. if this doesnt work try the door locks

To reset the security system on a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position without starting the engine. Leave it in this position for about 10 minutes until the security light on the dashboard turns off. Turn the key back to the "Off" position, then start the engine. If the system still doesn't reset, you may need to consult the owner's manual or a professional mechanic for further assistance.
it most likely is do to the security system being armed. try taking the key and turning it to unlock the door.
