making pieces of eight go furtherMeasuring biodiversity falls into the really-important-but-incredibly-difficult-to-do category of chores, so when someone comes up with a scheme to make it more cost-effective (i.e. easier) they deserve to be heard. A lengthy list of international conservation biologists, fronted by the University of East Anglia's Toby Gardner, has done just that, and just they've published their findings in Ecology Letters. After sampling a wide range of taxa at sites across 500 000 hectares of Brazilian Amazonia, birds and dung beetles shook out as being particularly good - and cheap - indicators of general biodiversity. However, focusing on these groups is a double-edged sword: on the one hand the money goes further, but on the other we remain ignorant of those poorly understood, expensive to study species.

Ecologists use three methods for measuring populations such as rabbits, the methods are called sample count, trap-mark-release method, and limiting factors or evaluations of the resources in an area.

The sample count method consists in counting the members of a population. Some of the members could be counted more than once and others could be completely missed.

The trap-mark-release method consists in putting a harmless trap. When a specimen is caught, it is marked or sometimes it is not. When they marked or not the animal, they release it. Then another animal is caught, and the process continues.By comparing the number of marked and unmarked specimens, the ecologists are able to estimate the population's size. This method is used for measuring wildlife populations such as rabbits.

the Limiting Factor method consists in analyzing the living and or nonliving factors that decrease a populations's size in the area or evaluating the resources in the area, like food, water, living space and shelter.

Here are a few methods:

  • Make predictions
  • Use sample counts
  • Track them down
  • Trap them to find some information
