An induction motor has a lagging power factor. Motors of more than about 2 HP are designed to have a power factor of 0.85 or higher.
Induction motor comprised inductor as the most part in it and an inductor has the characteristic to oppose the change of current, i.e., it has lagging power factor as current lags behind the voltage. Hence, an induction motor works on lagging power factor.
Power transformer is used step up or down the voltage for the electricity transmission while furnace transformer is used to melt the metals and ores in the electric furnace.
We certainly hope that you checked the furnace before posting the question here ... one would think this should not be a normal sound at all ... there is no correlation between power sources changing and the operation of the furnace. The furnace doesn't care ... it will operate with either power source, at least ond would think.
