I don't think this can be calculated exactly. Whether the glass will break will depend not only on the speed of the tennis ball, but also on its mass and size, its hardness, the thickness and quality of the glass, and perhaps even luck.

You need to determine the force required to break the glass. The momentum of the tennis ball is the mass*velocity. Some of this will be lost in deforming the ball at impact, a tiny bit converted into sound and the rest will from the impulse of the impact which must exceed the breaking force required.

How many pounds of pressure does it take to break a car side window?

Since it would probably be tempered glass, 100lbs. of pressure.

We have a 3/8" thick glass coffee table top which we want to shorten. We are told if the glass is tempered- no can do. True any way to tell if a piece of glassis tempered?

You can not cut tempered glass because once a piece is broken the whole glass shatters. Tempered glass is safer because it breaks into tiny pieces rather than sharp edges like regular glass. The only way to tell if a glass is tempered is to break the glass or use a polarizer to detect stress waves. You will see stress waves in tempered glass verses regular glass. Hope this helps.

Can gold be hammered into sheets?

Yes, gold can be hammered into sheets. A piece of gold the size of your thumbnail can be hammered into a sheet the size of a tennis court. Gold can be milled or pressed down to gold foil. This is the thinnest millage for gold and can be 50 times as thin as the human hair. It is so fine, your breath can break it.

What would cause a glass table to break on its own?

Severe changes in temperatures can shatter glass which often happens in car windshields. If there is a chip or crack in the glass and water penetrates it and freezes it can shatter glass especially if it is tempered. Heating can expand the tables frame and crush the glass but other than an object falling or direct pressure...ghosts?

How fast does a tennis ball have to go to break tempered glass?

You need to know the area of the glass, its span, how it is supported, and how thick it is; also you need to know the stiffness of the tennis ball; so this is a complex problem.

Why tempered glass is safer?

Tempered glass is safer than regular glass because it is stronger and more durable. When tempered glass breaks, it shatters into small, granular pieces instead of sharp shards, reducing the risk of injury. Additionally, tempered glass is more resistant to thermal stress, making it less likely to break due to sudden temperature changes.

How does the glass in car windows break?

It does not 'break', but rather it shatters. Automobile glass is designed (tempered) to 'shatter' into small cubic pieces so that it is less dangerous in case of an accident.

is it possible to laser cut tempered glass?

Tempered glass is "baked" after it has been cut to size, so generally speaking unless it is not of high quality, it would not be possible to cut the glass because it would just break instead of cutting.

Has anyone ever made a minimum break at snooker by potting a yellow after each red then all the colours?

A minimum break would be 1. A 1 break has often been made. No one would have ever done a 15 yellow break in competition, which would be a 72 break.
